05.24.2007: Ready for a Third Party?

A Republican Mayor of New York is contemplating a run for the White House in 2008, and CitizenU wants to know if you're ready to support him.

You've heard of Rudy Giuliani, but now comes word that current NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is thinking of self-funding a third-party bid for the presidency.

Unlike Ross Perot--the last billionaire to run as an independent candidate for President, Bloomberg actually has executive experience. Like Perot, polls indicate that Bloomberg would have little chance of winning 270 electoral votes but would probably lure millions of moderate Republicans away from the Republican nominee.

At a time with so much dissatisfaction with an outgoing Republican President, a Bloomberg campaign would certainly matter. CitizenU wants to know how much it would matter to you.

Good, yet not real smart if Bloomberg truly supports the GOP and its way of doing things in the 21st century. This takes away votes from the Republican nominee, thus making it easier for the Democratic candidate to win in 2008 (which I'm probably for, depending on who wins the nomination). Though if Bloomberg is a small-government conservative, helping the Democrats might be what he wants.

However, it would be even cooler if he could establish a permanent "third" party. It'd be nice to have more than 2 realistic candidates running (realistic in the sense that they could win). I'm hoping for a few party splits--4 parties: socially conservative Democrats, socially liberal democrats, socially conservative Republicans, and socially liberal Republicans.

Really, it's a world (or country) turned upside down when a large portion of the Congressional Democrats doesn't support a woman's right to choose while one or more of the GOP potential nominees is pro-choice.

I really hope he doesn't end up running because all it will do is destroy any slim chance the republican party has to win. I bet he isn't running because he wants to make a change, but instead to get his name out. Personally, I support the GOP and if Bloomberg runs, I will be one of the few that will watch the election results knowing who the winner is.
