I have a few points/questions...

+What's the worst thing that happen to someone if he voted twice?

+If you need someone to talk about the affect of Special Interest Groups, I can call in as a member of AIPAC, "America's Pro-Israeli Lobby"

+Champaign had two refrenda: 1) whether the US should pull out of Iraq and 2)Should we impeach President Bush.
---I've never heard of a local government having a vote that has no affect.

do you think that when one runner for a seat in the house or senate tries to throw an ad out to the public trying to put down his or her opponent really works? do the viewers start to see things in the way that the runner wnats them to, or is it a big waste of money by on party

If the democrats take the House, doesn't it mean that amnesty is a foregone conclusion since Bush and the Senate both support it?

Since the new democrat congressmen are from mostly conservative districts, how are they going to get along with Nancy Pelosi?

people dont vote due to their selfishness...unless you give away a car and turn it into a raffle right now, people wont vote. The only reason anyone does anything is becuase there is something in it for themselves! make voting a gameshow if we want people to vote that badly....traditional ways CLREALY dont work. and i agree ti eliminate the vote! krazy konservative korner wooo!!!!

I think so.

voting turnout is clearly terrible, so we are forced to eliminate the current way of voting. lowering the voting age will not make a huge difference. America is an overall selfish country, and they dont vote becuase there is nothing in it for them. i think the state of arizona is keying in to the future of voting, and soon all states will do the same

ok so whats the point of voting if we need to bribe our citizens to give a darn about who gets elected.... we shouldnt need to tell peole to vote... people should vote because the outcome could change their lives or their childrens lives for better or for worse... being sixteen myself i make sure that my mother knows what is going on in our politics because not only can her life change mine can also

Direct democracy by scientific random poll won't work. I learned from my statsitics class that polling questions are mostly biased and when the polling results are close to 50-50, it is a statistical tie. Are we going to toss a coin to decide the policy then?

At 7:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

the reason parents were so concerned with having polling places at their elementary schools was because of the scare of having convicted pedafilesinto their schools to vote, and possibly the scare of having their child kidnapped...although the latter is being overly protective.

At 7:35 PM, Blogger commy~corner said...

voting has to be turned into some sort of entertainment. Todays and tomorrows generation has to be constantly stimulated, and i might be wrong but i doubt standing in a box with a pencil seems NOT REALLY THAT exciting. Lowering the voting age yes will help turn out, but not by a great amount. In order to get people to vote, they must give away a car, boat, ANYTHING! America is incredibly selfish and unless there is something in it for them, they just DONT CARE!!

At 7:37 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

In response to aaron's comment, I think that a democratic congress may be a special scenario, and actually help balance out the distrust or even help spark popularity for Bush if the Congress and the President work together to fix things going on that have been criticised previously.

Are other states suffering from as many negative-ad campaigns as Illinois? If so, do you think they've affected the polls significantly? In Illinois, the ads seem to have deterred voters rather than encourage them. Is this occurring on a national level?

i think that most people would turn out to vote if MTV and if the cast of Laguna Beach did help out because teens today base their lives around shows on MTV and shows liek Laguna Beach and The OC so maybe if the ast was on there kids would vote if the age was lowered

Quick comment about something said previously in the show. If Republicans truly are for a "small government", then why do they feel they have the right to mandate whom we may sleep with and what medical procesdures we can have. Don't they actually mean small enough to leave buisinesses be, but large enough to hinder civil rights.

On the topic of impeachment:
It would be useless for the Democrats to impeach Bush because the movement would be killed in the Senate. Should the Democrats take power, I don't want the first three weeks of legislation spent slinging mud and accusing Bush of misconduct. We already know he's guilty of that. It would be far more effective to cripple him politically or better yet, I don't know, take some initiative for once and actually make policy reforms!

We the people are sick of slimy politicians, and we no longer have to listen to them. There are new candidates out there willing to speak up, on both sides of the spectrum, and the Governer ellect needs to learn from this. The Green party...who knew. Also, does anybody actually know the results from that race.

Its official. Ortega wins.

I think having another violent, socialist, democratically elected president in a Latin American state will prove to be a sty in the President's eye.

Bush has already stated his plans to withdraw all aid from Nicaragua.

The fact that free and fair democracy doesn't always create a positive outcome slaps the Bush administration's foreign policy in the face. It isn't “us vs. them” like in the Cold War, it isn't “us vs. them” like the war on terror... it is “us vs... them... you know... legitimate, democratic leaders”…

Eventually we’ll need an executive ready to address the full (unpopular) complexity of foreign policy. We need to purge the Marshall Plan from our government; nation-building? Ten fold.

If you think that electing a revolutionary responsible for the deaths of 30,000 Nicaraguans must have been an unjust election, talk to former president Jimmy Carter, he was an election monitor.

Hugo Chavez, eat your heart out.

I just heard that Whitehouse beat Lincoln Chaffe. This is a prime example of "Bush fatigue". I would like to see the Democrats take possession of the House, but I do believe a moderation is needed. Right now, nobody is worried about an overwhelming Democrat majority, but what would be the consequences of one. Isn't one unbalance just as bad as another, regardless of your political views. Beware of radicalism, for it leads you astray. We may win the House this election, but wil we be able to keep it if we aren't willing to compromise?

It looks like the GOP will maintain control of BOTH Houses.

Kirk looks good so far but Seals just closed the gap to 3%. I'm not worried about Kirk he can hold his own.

Tammy Duckworth has lost it, shes out. (Which is a good thing)

I find it hilarious that Mark Foley is within 1% of a win. While Negron will take his place I still find it amusing that people still have faith in the GOP in Florida. But then again his district is drawn to swing right.

Its sad that Blago is predicted to win. Now we're going to have social medicine introduced in IL. and all these high school kids who thought they were right in voting for Blago are going to be out of luck when IL. takes 20% of their paycheck to pay for someone else's hospital bill. I just don't know how people can vote for someone that supports a policy like that. It seems so intensely wrong I cant stand it.

I'm suprised my polling place isn't open late. When I went there today they did not have the write in list for the ballots. So they called the county clerk to find out where the write in list was so they could count the write in ballots. But, after they found the list none of the judges knew how to use it, so I called the county clerk. When I talked to the county clerk I was told that a person would be dispatched to our polling place to show the poll workers how to use the write in list so that these write in votes could be counted. (The write in vote was for the Libertarian candidate for Governor, Mark McCoy)

Judy Baar Topinka made a stupid mistake just now when she threw in the towel and gave Blago his second term. But then again, a $50 million dollar negative ad campaign can do that to a candidate.

Hopefully voters will make that right choices this midterm election. I hop everyone who was elegable to vote today voted because your vote does count.

Peace,
Stevo

Truly spoken like someone who has always received adequate healthcare. I feel like a jerk saying it, but until you've experienced what the other side is like, your opinion is ill-formed.

Medicine is a human right. Articles 1, 2, 3, 22, 23, 25, 27 of the UDHR all support it. If this document did not represent our beliefs, we should not have signed it into law.

Steve, I ask you to remain open to the idea of social medicine until you understand what not getting adequate healthcare is like. It fundamentally and institutionally creates a disparity in American opportunity…

…I’d pay 50% of my paycheck if I knew nobody would have to deal with sub-par healthcare.

Approach the subject with an open mind. Perhaps you should get off your PPO high-horse and go get some trashy medicine. You’ll change your mind, believe you me…

There’s nothing like a botched surgery from a bottom-of-the-barrel doctor, or a $1,500 co-pay for necessary medical care to change one’s mind.

As far as socialized medicine goes, yes, everybody will get healthcare, but like all socialized programs, it will eliminate competition. If the government works to reform insurance and regulate potential doctors, it would be more effective than just paying for it. I believe that healthcare reform is neccessary, but socializing isn't neccesarily the best option. On the other hand, I would agree that steve is speaking from a somewhat privledged position. And, steve, I actually did want to hear where you got your #'s on a GOP house.

Adam, your point is very well taken.

But I think you'll find the problems with socialized medicine are little more than myth. Next to educational programs, socialized medicine is the number one social program most often achieved: a)by consent of the people, and b)with the approval of its implementation.

Competition is great, but when you see it as the imparitive, you fall into a common trap. For instance, competition in public education is not beneficial to anyone. The fact that Stevenson can spend money to work on its image when CPS schools can't afford books, is an example of the government failing to provide something it has already taken responsibility for... It is like Brown Vs. Board never happened. Competition in public education just leads to wasteful inequity. True progress comes from the competition of higher education.

Medicine is the same way. Socializing healthcare certainly wouldn't prevent medical progress --- medical progress doesn't occur at your local acute care center...

...I'm certainly not a socialist.

It is a matter of whether or not one believes in the innate dignity of the human person, something which on grounds religious and ideological, I do.

Democrats won house!!!
Senate is very close but it looks like it may weigh on the right side. However, the independent voters have close enough to agreed to vote with the democrats thus being part of their voice. It is currently R48 to D46 + I2 tying up republican and democratic viewpoints. If democrats take congress hopefully we'll see some white house investigation against bush. He violated the geneva convention and violates our constitutional rights and he must be punished.
My personal belief in government?
A basic idea in government is separation of church and state. So why do Christian ideals enter our laws and politians? Why did the Anglican church come out to vote simply to fight abortion and none of the more important issues? By Christian ideals i mean --- abortion, stem cell research, gay marriage, gambling, creationism!? etc. OK... abortion heres a simple solution to everyongs ****ing problem. If you have the belief that you shouldnt abort a child... DONT ABORT YOUR CHILD. If for whatever reason its best for you in your situation to abort a child, then do so. If it doesnt effect your life get your nose out of it! These choices made by others dont change your lives. Again samething with gambling: if u believe in it, DO IT! if you dont, DONT DO IT! it doesnt affect you if someone else chooses to gamble with their money, how easy is that? Gambling simply should not be illegal anywhere, though an age requirement is necessary. Its your money, do with it what you will. Stem cell research? OK Republicans... lets use your brains, or lack there of. How do all of those Christian Southerners (usually) who have all those multiple births do it? Lets explore. A woman gets several fertilized eggs placed in her. Many of these are made others are thrown out. So what are you doing that is "legal" and you dont have a problem with? Throwing away fertilized eggs which is ending potential life. Now... these many fertilized eggs that are unused could be used for valuable research to cure genetic diseases and disorders, thus saving and facilitating thousands? hundreds of thousands? millions? of lives. But republicans are against such research because the fertilized egg is potential life and cant be born because of its sacrifice in this research? YOU KILL IT ANYWAYS WHEN YOU THROW THEM OUT! they are in favor of killing the potential life but not using them to save many many others? Wow. Thats something to stand by. Try some logic once and a while. Gay marriage. There have been new advancements called civil rights in the last 150 years, ever heard of it republicans? Gay people are people too, and they deserve rights taht all of us enjoy. If two people wish to get married adn they are straight its ok. so how can you tell a gay couple they cant marry? EQUAL RIGHTS! First id like to say that this adds to my previous points. IT DOES NOT EFFECT YOUR LIFE IF THEY MARRY! they want to do it, it hurts no one, it gives them equal rights... GIVE THEM THE RIGHT! Secondly, all youre doing is delaying the inevitable. There was a time where women and blacks had no rights. First blacks gained their rights, then women, as they struggled to attain them. its the civil rights movement, making all people equal as is present in over united states constitution. even after all this time we havent given everyone equality. Gays are still struggling to attain the rights we all enjoy. By telling a man he cant marry a man or a woman she cant marry a woman, you may as well call a black man a nigger and enslave him! obviously this is extreme, because of public views. but it is the same principle, denying a man his rights and liberties! Republicans try so hard to restrict these rights... are todays republicans secretly white supremecists? Too extreme? maybe not, give some thought to what they fight for. Another idea... CREATIONISM? ARE YOU INSANE? ARE YOU ON CRACK? get that the **** out of here. Separation of church and state? my ***. lets teach in school that a magical force called "god" created earth and many and defies physics sprinkled some sand and whatever "he" did and created man along with many many years of scientific research that goes against the idea 100%! that is so incredibly stupid. believe what you want in church. DONT PUT IT IN OUR SCHOOLS. wheres the fact in the bible? how could there be a god? how do u explain the coexistance of god and scientific evidence? religion says that god is everything that we cant explain. christians thought it was a geocentric universe until it was disproven. according to religion the earth and universe and life have only been around about 5000 years. very much disproven. man wrote stories of god and hades and heaven and hell. christian beliefs have been taken from older religions and their ideas. religion is completely a creation of man, there is no fact behind it. i could go on and on and on about why i KNOW this is true. but ill cut it off their. in closing... republicans... dont force your christian beliefs on everyone by preventing people from their equality, making their own chocies in life and in spending their own money, and telling us we cant do research to help the greater good. Some of these beliefs being forced on all makes their politics almost dictatorlike.

i have much more info and logical information then is written above. this was thrown together pretty quickly so it may have things missing... much more could be added to fill holes.

If a senator such as obama is elected president, who takes his place when he leaves?

Well...somebody enjoys screaming alot.

If all you want out of Democratic control of congress is revenge, then enjoy the fun fest while it lasts and get ready for Republican dominance come 08. Bush is guilty. However, the people know this, and they proved this by electing a Democratic majority. Impeaching the president would be a useless endeavor because it would die in the Senate, and it would cost many vital first weeks of Democratic power. By all means have your revenge, but then leave, because when elections role around and we stil have a bad economy, a war, and a poor healthcare system, the Democrats will lose control becasuse they spent to much time impeaching a puppet president. By all means impeach Bush, but realize that a usless tirade of vengance does absolutley nothing but gratify the personal whims of the Democratic party. I would love to have had him impeached, but the time for that was after the illegal wire taps, not now. Part of having power is knowing how to use it. Democrats will get their revenge in the form of congressional control and the utter failure of his last two years. It's time for Democrats to get used to being in the majority, to stop saying "OO OO look what he did" and instead say look what we can do.

Furthermore, it is not Republicans forceing their "Christian beliefs" on us, but radicals. There is a difference. Besides, these are not merley Christian beliefs, but rather an appeal to societal morality in general. It is a dirty tactic, and one that certainly violates seperation of Church and state, but be more open in criticism than just Christian and leave some room for those of less radical persuasion. When morality becomes a tool for hack politicians it is belittled into nothingness. The true crime here was not impressing morality upon us, but bastardizing what morality truly is by turning it into a sond-byte for political power. That is inexscusable.

As it regards to rest of the policies. I agree, only with less swearing. I see no threat in Gay Mairraige, and I see beinefit in stem cell research and agree wholeheartedly. Although the republican woman comment was a little harsh. Abortion is a private choice that should not be involved in the government. Furthermore, as one who shall, unless very odd things happen, ever have one, I have no right to prevent others from doing so. THe bigger picture with government regulation of abortion also includes government regulation of what other mdical procedures or medicine I can have. I personally don't want to be told that my heart transplant is against God's will simply because our morality has, once again, shifted.

I do difer on gambling. While it is a personal problem and not a federal one, like alcohol or other addictive substances, some form of regulation is needed.

I look forward to progress with a new congress, and pray that we may keep it.

True tolerance...

Your statements made about Christianity are uninformed, offensive, and stereotypical...

I think you'd be shocked if you knew something about Catholicism or the reforms of JPII. God isn’t incongruous with evolution --- even the pope emphasized this fact.

In terms of being against abortion, your analogy is the same as saying if you lived in a country where genocide ran rampant but nobody you knew was killed, and you were fine, that it doesn’t affect you…

That’s obviously not true. I do believe that the innate dignity of the human person of before spoke of is an ideal coming from religion. I do think any religion practiced justly would instill that belief.

I’d concede that being pro-life and pro-death penalty is a hypocrisy coming mostly from a literal interpretation of a more vengeful old testament God. I don’t find this idea that human person can be sullied in Christianity.

Marriage is a basic human right. Duh.

If you want to call a group fascist “Christians” please, call them evangelical Protestants :P

We had a hard time tuning in to WAES; the signal was really fuzzy and we kept getting old rock music (???). But from what we did get to hear, it was really cool :) I'm pretty surprised our governor got re-elected (by a pretty big margin too). Now that the democrats have the house, it looks like they're not too far away from taking the senate. Does this really mean Bush is in danger of impeachment? What kind of evidence would congress need to make a legit accusation?

Messner- You know very little about me and as a consequence have made a mistake in assuming that I have not experienced the dregs of healthcare. "Steve, I ask you to remain open to the idea of social medicine until you understand what not getting adequate healthcare is like." I was open to the idea of social medicine until 2003. In 2003 I spent my 3 month summer vacation on an Indian Reservation in South Dakota. On the Indian Reservation I learned quite a bit about a day in the life of a Native American. The U.S. government gives these people $2000/ month to live. In the cases where the men in the family don't take the money to buy drugs or beer with, the family is only left with about $400 after taxes, utilities, phone(if they have one), water, and gas. This $400 is often either spent on food or medicine/ heath care. The choice between the two necessary items results in many deaths of children and adults every year.

What I'm trying to say is, people with inadequate income cant afford to pay their own hospital bills much less anyone else's. So thats why I'm for private medicine. It gives those people with inadequate income a choice in how they spend their healthcare money instead of having to give it to the government every month.

Also, social medicine DOES NOT WORK because who says the government will give you the money anyway?

If I were to go to a hospital and I was told my apendics was about to rupture, I would need an immediate operation. The problem with social medicine would be that I would be put on a waiting list while the govt. decides if they want to give me the money for he operation or not. During that time my apendics will rupture and more than likely I will die of some horrible infection.

Besides that, there is NO better way to drive doctors out of the U.S. than to institute social medicine. Doctors will take an enormous pay cut to move into the new system.

I agree that there are many positives that go with the idea of social medicine, but the negatives FAR out weigh them.

Peace,

Stevo

Messner- You sound a lot like Dan Seals at the debate. You trash and slam everyone else for what they believe and yet you wont say anything you think because you're worried about getting slamed yourself. Isn't that funny, Dan Seals lost the election.

"...I'm certainly not a socialist."

I don't know how you don't think you're a socialist. You are by far the most liberal, leftist, Democrat I have ever met.

You should move down to Nicaragua.

You would fit in well there.

"I don't know how you don't think you're a socialist. You are by far the most liberal, leftist, Democrat I have ever met."

Reasons I'm not a socialist:

-I believe in free and fair trade.
-I believe that a competitive economic environment breeds progress.
-I don't believe in welfare or existing government social programs.
-I don't believe in affirmative action.
-I am pro-choice...

I sound like a Republican presidential hopeful or something.

Steve, I’m not trying to attack you personally, nor your beliefs. The beliefs underlying my political ideas can easily be communicated, but are very difficult to internalize…

Messner,

I agree with you on one thing and that is that I also disagree with all social welfare programs in America. (i.e. Medicare, Medicaid, social security) But I don't understand how you are for social medicine and against welfare. Your two beliefs conflict.

But I do wish to end this on a positive note and take the high road so to speak. So I thank you for a healthy debate sir.

Peace,

Stevo
