9/6/2006: Kudos for Katie

Instead of reading the news, Katie Couric was making news in her debut at as the nightly news anchor at CBS.
Yes, we know, you didn't watch because the evening network news is for old people. (It's probably impossible for you to get through all of those advertisements for Buicks and cholesteral drugs without a comedic rant by Stephen Colbert.) But give Katie a chance.
In the initial broadcast, more time was dedicated to fewer stories which CitizenU. has long advocated as a way to give the news more contextual substance. We were also excited about Couric's invitation for regular Americans to speak their mind on issues most important in their world. (Stay tuned for 2 Regular Guys with Katie!)
Of course, CBS catered to our cultural obsession with celebrity circus acts in a story about baby Suri Cruise. But this mush paled in comparison to the analysis of her debut by the cable news clowns who couldn't stop obsessing about Katie's legs.
(For the record, CitizenU. will reserve judgement on her legs until Charlie Gibson's pecs are also scrutinized.)
CitizenU. firmly believes that young Americans participate in government when they are asked to to so. In this case, we invite you to check out the evening news more often to see how Katie and the other anchors communicate the news to America. We promise that you'll learn something more than the benefits of Preparation H and what baby Suri looks like.

The problem with CBS and the other network news stations is that they are sitting on the fence, in a sense. People watch Colbert because he's funny, but if you want serious news, is CBS really the place to get it? If you're really looking for serious coverage of political issues and whatnot (or looking for an excuse to take a nap at 6pm) why not try the news hour or BBC?
The problem (vaguely mentioned above) with most network news is that they aren't entirely serious about news, but at the same time don't have the comedic appeal of people like Colbert.
I agree. To find news stations that aren't trying to P.C. their way into Americans' hearts is more of a task than people realize.
i just cant take her seriously
Veronica Corningstone: I told you that I wanted to be an anchor...
Ron Burgundy: I thought you were kidding. I thought it was a joke. I even wrote it down in my diary - Veronica had a very funny joke today. I laughed about it later that night.
