4/4/06: The Regular Guys: Congressional Tools - Hammers, Nails, Whips

Straight talk about issues you need to know, even on Wednesdays. The Regular Guys have been away and cannot afford to be away anylonger. Normally we take the Friday blog spot on CitizenU but simply could not resist this vitally important story. Today the Regular Guys take up the issue of Tom DeLay stepping down from Congress. What does this mean for Republicans? Democrats? And what role do Congressional Leaders play in the legislative process? What do you think?

Congressional Tools: Hammers, Nails, and Whips.

When I saw the headline that said DeLay was stepping down, well, I think I let out a loud shout of glee. I mean, not that I revel in other people's misfortunes. When Arafat died, my family couldn't believe that I wasn't happy; instead, I told them that I hoped his soul would be guided in a different direction. Which is what I hope DeLay will do. Hopefully, his experiences will inspire other Congresspeople to do things the legal way. And maybe, in two years, he can take the lead in helping fight corruption in Congress. If he's not in jail. But really, I don't like the guy, so like Arafat, no loss. However, his resignation does place "innocent until proven guilty" in jeopardy. If he's still innocent, why does he have to resign?

What does it mean for the 'Phants? It shouldn't mean anything. They need to continue what they've been doing: promoting tax cuts for the rich, taking away our rights, ruining our education system, and supporting a war that we never should have started. Apparently they think they're doing a good job. For the Dems? It shouldn't mean anything either. Campaigns should be based mostly on what one is going to do for the country, not on the faults of the other guy. Instead of constantly criticizing Bush and the GOP, the Dems need to come up with their own ideas for improving education, protecting our civil liberties, and reducing our "addict[ion] to oil".

I just have to share this "fun fact" I heard today in class. Apparently today was a "landmark" day. A day when, at 1:02 pm. and 3 seconds the date was 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06. I just find this interesting because my fellow classmates are more concerned about this miniscule event compared to other more pressing matters. They say this event will only happen once in our lifetime. Personally, I would rather focus on issues and events that will effect the generations to come.

Peace,
Stevo

Stevo,

Were you Abraham Lincoln or George Washington in a previous life?

Clearly you live in the city on a hill.

I listened to the podcast on my Pod on the way to the land of toolboxes--I mean tools--I mean, DC.

Absolutely hillarious and informative, as usual.
