04/21/06: The Regular Guys: US/Chiina Relations - Guess Hu's Coming to Dinner?

Today the Regular Guys take up an issue which is deserving of our time and attention. The President of China visited the United States this week. Symbolically this rivals Nixon's historic visit to China in the early 70s. Much has changed since then. The Chinese economy is growing at a staggering pace. The Chinese economy soon will be the largest in the world. We share much, yet there are marked differences. We believe in inalienable individual rights they do not.
Should we be best friends? Can we? Do we have any choice? Like Nixon, is it time to focus on our similarities? Or are we turning a blind eye to the pink elephant in the room?
US/China Relations: Guess Hu's Coming to Dinner?.
What should be our policy toward China?

Here I am, sitting at the University of Illinois Model UN Conference on a weekend when I think every person from the Chicago suburbs was in Chambana--MUN teams, Math teams, string quartets, and maybe Science Olympiad were all here. Plus just the normal kids coming to visit. Anyway, on Friday, the head of the British Consulate in Chicago came to speak to us, and one of the topics he touched upon was the UK's position on China. I happen to agree with what he said, and that being we can't isolate China. We can't stop trading with it just because of its abysmal human rights record. Our economies are too linked. Though I was a little surprised when I saw that Hu was coming to visit.
I wonder if there will be a period of two superpowers like the USSR and USA during the cold war...and i wonder if america can maintain its position on the top of the world for much longer. besides, there's so many more chinese than americans. and they all hold the same beliefs...of course by nature of their government. but imagine what they could do if they completely mobilized and just reached their full potential and all.
