1/25/06: Hee Haw!: What I Learned About Donkeys While Attending the Senate Judiciary Committee

“Donkeys, zebras and mules all differ somewhat from horses in conformation. The most noticeable difference is of course the ears. Donkeys ears are MUCH longer in proportion to their size than a horse’s.” *

Clearly the Democrats have overzealously listened to their base in the Alito process. The majority of the American people have decided that Sam Alito is both qualified and possessing of the temperament required of the Supreme Court. Historically, this has been enough. Democrats are listening elsewhere, however, to a base that cannot accept its’ minority status. Furthermore, Democrats on the committee have grown too accustomed to hearing themselves talk. Embarrassingly, Sen. Biden asked a 3,500 word question.

“The mane and tail in the donkey are coarse.” *

Democrats chose to rough up Alito and his family. Despite accusations, Mrs. Alito’s tears were not staged. They were real. This caused a backlash even in the liberal media. Durbin before his vote against Alito yesterday talked about Republicans giving Harriet Meiers a “back-handed slap.” This is not a metaphor of which we should be proud.

“The vocal qualities are the frequently remembered differences in the long-ears. The donkey’s voice is a raspy, brassy Bray, the characteristic Aw-EE, Aw-EE sound. Jacks especially seem to enjoy braying, and will "sound off" at any opportunity.” *

How long have we waited to fill O’Connor’s open seat? Democrats have put more delay in D.C. than the Republican Majority Leader, Tom DeLay.

“Donkeys can be used just like horses under saddle and in harness, although donkeys are more laid back and self-preserving in nature.” *

Straight partisan votes are expected. The Committee did not disappoint. Republicans - 10, Democrats - 8. With mid-term elections coming soon, Democrats appear more interested in finding wedge issues to promote themselves rather than effective governing. Their recent behavior gives new meaning to “stubborn mule.”

“Donkeys can also make wonderful guard animals -- a donkey gelding or jennet will take care of an entire herd of cattle, sheep or goats -- the natural aversion to predators will inspire the donkey to severely discourage any canine attacks on the herd.”*

Didn’t know this . . . mmm. I knew I liked donkeys. We need a check against the wolves. Hee Haw, Hee Haw.

I agree that the Democrats are often just trying to steal the spotlight.

However, I disagree with your position that Alito should be in because he "is both qualified and possessing of the temperament required of the Supreme Court. Historically, this has been enough."

I agree that he is qualified, but there are definitely some hints of bias that the Democrats, as Democrats, have reason to be worried about.

If it were a Democratic President and Congress and the nominee was possibly biased the other way, I think that at this point in our history we would be seeing the same stubborness from the Republicans.

With the current mapping of the court, O'Connor's replacement could be the deciding vote in a number of very important and controversial cases.

I would bet that the majority of Americans don't know who Alito is. Not a huge majority, but at least over 50%. The Democrats are listening to a base that actually pays attention to the happenings in the American government.

It was fascinating to hear analyists on WGN radio the other day saying that , since the Democrats decided not to filibuster (unless I heard wrong), the real problem will be in a year or two if STEVENS tries to step down.

Interesting how first Alito was the big ticket, and now his role as swinger-replacement is being downplayed.

Oh, additionally, Mr. Coneen, sincere apologies about the sweater vest comments (though Mrs. Duncan apparently backs them up? Even though I was kidding and she apparently wasn't). In comparison to donkeys, all criticism fades into the background.

Not that I don't like Democrats.

More an aversion to anything politicians "launder" -- speech, clothes, money, whatever.

Somebody doesn't like your sweater vest AC? What a shame, I went out and bought some after being inspired. I guess I'll just never be cool...

I agree with silver. If things were the other way around the Republicans would be doing and saying the same things. The only change would be a different person's wife would leave the room in tears. Simle as that.

Peace,
Stevo

p.s. How did this turn into a discussion on sweater vests?
